The action at Drewry's Bluff on May 15, 1862, involved most of the Virginia's crew and others from the James River Squadron. The CSS Thomas Jefferson was scuttled their and her guns were raised up the bluff and emplaced there.

The Monitor was ineffectual due to its design. The Galena was quite damaged in the attack.

A lot of attention was placed on this battle as it saved Richmond and it involved the Virginia's crew. The senior officer, in overall command, was CMDR Farrand, while the senior military officer was Capt. Drewry.

(Another well known battle occurred at Drewry's Bluff in 1864.)
