One advantage the USS Monitor likely took into battle and the CSS Virginia likely did not; is that forged (heavier, like depleted uranium today), and lathe-spun close-tolerance cannon balls were specially made for the USS Monitor (at Novelty Iron Works?), and presumedly taken on board and available at the battle. Were they used? Have any been recovered and weighted?
