The CSS Richmond was under construction before the CSS Virginia was scuttled. It was called a second Merrimack or Merrimack No. 2 before it was named. There was also a later CSS Virginia (often referred to as CSS Virginia II).

See http://www.hazegray.org/danfs/csn/r.txt
and http://www.hazegray.org/danfs/csn/v.txt

The Richmond was mostly built at Gosport (Norfolk) and, as it became clear Norfolk would fall, towed to Richmond where she was finished in July.

To add to the confusion, there was a blockade runner that was really named "Merrimac". See
http://www.hazegray.org/danfs/csn/m.txt
It was a British steamer, then Confederate blockade runner, then later, after it was captured, the USS Merrimac.

Finally, there was a US chartered transport steamer, Merrimac.

That was all in the Civil War!
