Does anyone have any data on the size of the posts used for the sides of the Virginia's casemate and how far apart they were placed?
Also, were the armor plates at either end of the casemate actually curved? My thinking is that the Tredegar Iron Works had enough of a problem producing the thickness needed for the armor, let alone creating curved plates. It's also doubtful that the thick planks could be bent and fastened to the posts. In that line, could it be that the plates were flat and the posts and underlying planks were cut in such a way that the plates were bolted to them so that the ends appeared round? If I'm wrong, I'm willing to acknowledge it, but I'm very curious if anyone has any information on this aspect.
