In Irwin Berent's article on all the Monitor crew, Hans Anderson reported that he and Charles Peterson were at the guns and they agreed to double shot the cannon. It sounds as if they double shotted both guns, but it isn't clear.
This does correspond to Wood's statement
"Again she came up on our quarter, her bow against our side, and at this distance fired twice. Both shots struck about half-way up the shield, abreast of the after pivot, and the impact forced the side bodily in two or three inches. All the crews of the after guns were knocked over by the concussion, and bled from the nose or ears. Another shot at the same place would have penetrated."
This also implies that both guns were doule shotted.
