Irwin Berent quotes some of the "Memoirs of John Driscol,, 1st. Class Fireman, USS Monitor, March 9, 1862." He indicates that after Worden was injured, the two vessels went in opposite directions for about 20 minutes. "When we all came on deck were about 3 miles away and could see nothing but that men on the Merrimac were carrying loads from her.... as if they were about to abandon her."
Could that be describing the row boats setting the kedge anchors?
