No, but I believe it was the first ironclad ship in a battle against other ships. On March 8, 1862, the theory that an ironclad ship would be better suited in battle than a wooden ship was proved. When the Virginia was launched, many were concerned that she would sink.
There were still many design flaws to be worked out over the coming years. Neither the Virginia nor the Monitor were suited for open water. Both had vulnerabilities that could be exploited.
