I'm not familiar with that particular kind of relic. Did it come with paperwork? Does it have any other markings on it? You say "supposedly....sawn from...". I know of no part of the armor that was 1.5" thick so "sawn" doesn't seem right.

However, there were many different relics from the 1870s and up to around 1907 that were sold. How many of those were real, I don't know.

The Virginia/Merrimac would have been invincible if it had all the iron in all the relics that were sold!

I don't know who else might be willing to help. You might try the Portsmouth Harbor Museum (Portsmouth, VA) -- they might know someone that knows more about relics. I was just at the Mariners' Museum and they mentioned various relics but didn't happen to mention one like this.

I wish I could be more help. If you find out more, please post the info.
