Hi, Can anyone give me answers to the following questions? I have original copies of a magazine called "The London Illustrated News" for a section of 1863. They are full of pictures and reports of the American Civil War. First question is what is an "Ericson raft"? Apparently one was fitted to USS Weehawken and was designed to protect against Confederate mines. It was lost and washed ashore at Morris Island, Charlston. This report was in the issue dated May 2nd 1863. Second question is what happened to the ships CSS Palmetto State and CSS Chicora (described as iron clad gunboats? These vessels are reported to have been constructed by the people of Charlston on the same plan as the CSS Virginia (actually described as the Merrimac). They were commanded by Commodore Ingraham in a successful attack against patrolling Federal ships on 30th January 1863.I look forward to receiving comments on these questions,Regards, Jack Ansell
