Actually, he was neither Captain of this vessel, nor Admiral. His rank was Captain and he was the Flag Officer of the James River Fleet (the CSS Virginia was his Flagship). The rank of Admiral did not exist yet. Later in the war it did, and Buchanan had the rank of Admiral then.
