Road bed in cuts 16 ft. Sloops 1/2 to 1. + Embankments the Slopes are 1 1/2 to 1. some of the banks are 8 ft 9 ft 10 ft + 12 ft = the work was staked in this way in order that it might suit either a broad or narrow guage road. The ceremony was witnessed only by members of the family. The bride, who is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles M. Barnes, is a native of San Antonio. She graduated from the High School in 1905 with highest honors, winning the Mayor's medal, the Texas University scholarship and read the valedictory. The groom is a business man of De- Ridder, La., where he hold an important position in one of the large lumber mills. The records of Surry County go back to 1652 Greensville Count cut from Brunswick County in 1781 Sussex county cut from Surry in 1754 =================================================== The records on file in the General Land Office in Texas show that Hiriam Riggs - appeared before the board of Land Commisioners of Brazoria County Texas and proved according to law that he arrived in the county {"county" might be "country"} previous to 2nd May 1835 and was Married and entitled one leagaue + labor of land. dated Jany 26 1838. {"+ labor" is not clear} The above is all I know of Hiram Riggs He may be + more than likely was the brother of David Riggs. =================================================== Dr Crutchen Bethesda Tennessee wrote Feby 27 1908 - that his mother Elizabeth Riggs was born Mch 30th 1806 and married William Crutchen May 9 1823 to them was born 10 children He says the old family bible shows that his Mothers father was Zadoc Riggs and that he was born April 1st 1774 and died May 19 1816 He also says his Mother had an uncle Gideon Riggs who lived and died at Riggs X Roads Williamson County Tenn- In another letter dated Nov 15 1908 he says {paragraph in a different hand} Zadoc Riggs married Nancy Fleming + had two sons and two daughters - Daniel, Joel Elizabeth and Martha. Moved with his father to Williamson County Tennessee. when quite young. His brother Daniel raised him and sent him to West Point Military Academy as a cadet 1st July 1828. He graduated in 1833 was brevetted 2nd lieu - 1st Infantry in July {"frevetted"?} 1833 and resigned 9th Oct 1833 - was teller in State Bank at Tuska -loosa. He and Johnson Jones Hooper became asssociated together and bought and edited the Montgomery Mail In 1856, while editing the Mail, Mr E.J. Fitzpatrick took offence at an editorial and wrote Mr JRiggs an offensive letter. When Mr JRiggs sent him a challenge to fight a duel - which was accepted by Mr Fitzpatrick whose friend was Mr Gabriel Au Val - and Ben Lane Posey was Mr Riggs friend - Columbus Ga was selected as the place. but =================================================== E. Y. Fair and S. F. Jackson {"Y" is unclear} friends of both parties adjusted the affair amicably + honorably Sometime about 1858 Mr Riggs had decided on going to Galveston Texas with Col A. N. Spaight- but something caused him not to go. On 26 June 1862 Mr JRiggs married Elizabeth Martha Jones but from this marriage no children were born. It was not a happy marriage. She went back to Tuskaloosa to live with her relatives or friends + Col Riggs lived in Montgomery and was appointed Adjutant and inspector Genl of Alabama =================================================== by Gov Watts who was his warm persona friend - in 1864 - He was living at the Exchange Hotel in Montgomery At the time of his death which occured .
